El trabajo ganador del Concurso Nacional CAP, de la firma Cheng Franco Arquitectos, del profesor Jorge Cheng fue publicado en la web World Architecture News:

Cheng Franco Arquitectos designs recreational resort in the cloud forest of Peru.

Designs have been released by Peru-based firm Cheng Franco Arquitectos for a resort 356m above sea level in the Peruvian Amazon. Tourism is one of the main drivers in Tarapoto (City of Palms) as travellers often begin their adventures through the Amazon Rainforest from the lofty community. The former ARB RIBA architects from Lima have created a concept that not only meets the current brief in sustainable fashion but allows for easy expansion in the future.

Using a prefabricated method to reduce waste and traffic to the elevated site, the design uses a base module 6m long in a hexagonal form which can be flexible for variable uses across the site. The brief called for 20 bungalows, 30 double rooms, a 300-seat auditorium, 2 multipurpose rooms, a restaurant and bar, sports area with swimming pool, and supporting administration and services spaces.

Practice directors Lorena Franco and Jorge Cheng detail: “The design challenges the expected conventional pitched roof building that is often built in the rain forest and instead, it proposes a flexible architectural modular system which can be dispersed or increased in size, in a controlled form, offering different solutions but maintaining an architectural consistency.”

Located in the ‘cloud forest’ on the high jungle plateau, the new resort utilises an adaptable base module for its many volumes. With a selection of 7 module types, the basic hexagonal form can be open or closed and with or without a roof shelter depending on the needs and use of the building, i.e. whether it is a bedroom or bar, public or private volume.

The structures are to be realised using bamboo or similar local materials such as eucalyptus with a radial intertwined organisation of tubular sections resting on a single point, enabling the sides of the volume to be open to the elements should the architects wish. The roof systems have been designed to collect water for added sustainability measures ensuring a certain level of self sufficiency.
